Soy Curls are a simple solution for plant-based protein. It’s easy to cook them perfectly every time. Just follow these 4 steps: soak, squeeze, sauté, sauce!

Step 1: Soak Em’

  • Cover the Soy Curls in water until they float. Be generous!

Step 2: Squeeze Em’!

  • Give all of them a good ol’ squeeze. Really get in there, you won’t hurt them. The more water you can get out the better the sauce will absorb into the Soy Curls.

Step 3: Sauté ‘Em!

  • Add oil to a pan and preheat on medium to medium low heat. Add your Soy Curls and sauté for 5 minutes.
  • Move to the next step once they are lightly browned. The goal of this step is to remove even more water so that they will soak up the sauce. Speaking of which, let’s do that now…

Step 4: & Sauce Em’

  • Generously apply your sauce of choice. I’m using about a 1/4 cup of buffalo sauce. If you’re unsure how much to use, try adding a few tablespoons, then taste and add more if desired.
  • Stir the sauce in…
  • And once the sauce is all absorbed, or the consistency you want, you’re ready to serve on any dish you like!

Commonly Asked Questions

What are Soy Curls?

Soy Curls are Textured Vegetable Protein (aka TVP) made from…well, soy beans. They are special as they are made from full-fat soy giving them better flavor and texture than other TVP products.

What other sauces can you use?

Any sauce you want! Do your best to pair it with what you’re serving. I love to use BBQ sauce and buffalo sauce, but that is because I always happen to have them in my fridge.

Can you make Soy Curls at home?

Unfortunately no, you cannot make TVP (what Soy Curls are made of) at home. You need special machinery which is typically only available to commercial producers.

Where can I buy Soy Curls?

You can order them online here but you can also typically find them in the dry goods section of most “health food” or “artisan” grocery stores.

Vegan Inside-Out Grilled Cheese

Vegan Inside-Out Grilled Cheese

This grilled cheese is like nothing you've ever had. We've got cheese on the inside AND outside.

Prep Time: 2 minutes
Cook Time: 15 minutes
Total Time: 17 minutes

Ingredients

  • 2 slices of white bread (make sure it's vegan)
  • 1 slice of vegan cheese
  • 1/2 Cup loosely packed vegan cheese shreds, divided (or 2 slices of vegan cheese*)

Instructions

1: Preheat a pan to low to medium heat. Add a slice of bread to the pan, then a slice of cheese, add your second bread slice on top. Cover with a lid and let cook for 3 minutes checking every minutes to see if the pan is toasting the bread too fast. Adjust heat as needed.

2: Once the bread is a beautiful golden brown, flip, cover, and let cook for another 3 minutes or until the other side is toasted.

    3. Remove the grilled cheese from the pan.

4: To the same pan, still preheated to low to medium heat, add a generous pinch (about a loosely packed 1/4 cup) of shredded vegan cheese to the pan and make a circle the size of your bread. Use a spatula if needed to shape.

5: Once the top of your cheese pile begins to melt, place your grilled cheese on top of the melted cheese. Let cook, uncovered, for about 3 minutes on low heat. Again, adjust the heat as needed. We're cooking this low and slow.

6: When you have about 30 seconds left in step 5, on the same pan that your sandwich is on, add the rest of your cheese (another rough 1/4 cup). Flip your sandwich so the "un-cheesed" side goes face down on the new melted cheese. Cook for another 3 minutes, adjusting the heat as needed.

    7: Cut and serve!

Notes

  1. I used Daiya shreds for this and it worked great, if you use a different brand of cheese, you may get different results.
  2. You can use slices in place of shreds if you only have that on hand*
